Primal War 7

"Fantastic"

submission: Primal War 7
date: April 28, 2006

I just let this load for like thirty minutes, that's how much I wanted to see it. Fantastic, it didn't disapoint. All the characters were done with frame by frame drawn animation pretty much the entire time - so impressive! This bitching about the sound I read - disregard it, the sound is fine, it's part of the style of these now, use of silence and stuff. Truth be told I didn't notice any shortcomings here. Perhaps during the fight sequence he took on too many dinosaurs, so you never really had a dual, didn't see them until they were dead - but this is clearly nitpicking, I loved it. Went for ages too. I absolutely love the way you did that water splash, tinted well with the light reflecting off it - it was noticed, and great! You really don't skimp on any of the aspects of your movies unlike so many lazy animators out there - it makes it a really deep and nice world to watch develop. Well done, keep it up.

Miscalculation - Ep1

"Pretty sweet effort"

date: April 17, 2006

Well Desperate Housewives is a sucky compelation episode tonight so I watched your flick tonight - pretty cool! Yet again I'm impressed by your hit and smoke graphics, flame and lazer shot effects - they're great! Really smooth, fluid and seamless, excellent. Some suggestions you might like to look into for the next one is to put in some colour into your ships (I'll tell you how if you're unsure), and have some music for the action sequences. I read you took the music out, but I think it'd really pick it up to have something in the action sequences at least. The ships could also use a bit of an ambient hum or something too I spose - not too loud, but something. I know you're not too interested in optimisation (I don't know why I enjoy making things as small as possible but I do) but that scene where the cargo ship is dumping cargo and stuff - that could've easily been done with a single 3d object, not a tweened ship over like 30 seconds or something - it probably made about a meg of the file size right there! Not that many people on dialup anymore so you may not care, I don't know. Noticed the stars in the background didn't move all the time there was action going on which is a pity because when they did, it was fantastic - just adds a kind of realism to the camera movement, and adds to the chaos of an action sequence. I like the detail you go into with your story, that's cool. Great work on the flash, well done getting an award :)

Author's Response:

Thanks heaps man, i know there is a lot of mistakes, and ive made most of the models for the next one so far, written the script, now i'm just putting the scenes together.

Really appreciate your review man, cant wait to see your next movie.

I'm really not! So it is with a bit of unease that I do so here - this Flash is PERFECT. The voices are fantastic, the animation is exactly like Beavis and Butthead - absolutely a fantastic flash movie! I can't get across how much I like this movie, so suffice to say, I like it a lot.

"Great Animation"

submission: Naughty
date: April 12, 2006

Fantastic cartoony animation, with the stretching and skewing at all the right times. The graphics have just enough shading to look cartoony without looking like they're trying for too much realism (which obviously can't be achieved with a clock movie!) So great work there. a great wee amusing song to make a video to too! A well done peice of work. I would hope you'd try (I don't know if you usually do) to animate some other characters besides clocks - think how much better a reception you'd get, and really, you have great skill at cartooning. Pity for it to go to waste due to manys preconceptions and instinctual voting of 0 to anything with clock in it.

Fire Tutorial

"Why"

submission: Fire Tutorial
date: April 10, 2006

You say yourself, 'this is the BASICS'. Ie. anyone with half an ounce of intelligence could figure out how to animate fire - and better than that mind you. (It's better if the 'slithers' of fire sorta bubble up in about 4 frames, rather than jumping side to side). I was thinking, oh cool I'll learn how to animate really sexy fire, but no! You should really teach how to use the mouse and open Flash first, that's about the level of this. Come on man!

Since I expected it to be one boring slow zoom - however you took a little spin on what I expected so I gave it slightly higher. I do second what others said that this just tells those dopey bastards how to do it properly - and I wouldn't mind if it was only middle aged ruined stockbrokers who use the site but its not, its insecure little teenagers with a whole life to live. Well animated though, just do something a bit more tasteful than mocking suicide next time huh, cretin.

"I wish you could've worked longer on this."

submission: traffic limbo
date: April 4, 2006

I agree with what most other people have said there - it's a shame this idea was 'wasted' on this animation. From the starting scene you can see the crummy style is more of a 'stylistic feature' than an inability to do better - remake it, properly and see how it goes. The gun was a disgrace, the 3D car was so out of place (and hollow) it was just mental. Great idea, nice direction - just the graphics REALLY let this down. You didn't even draw the crossing dudes, they're imported graphics!!

Mentos Fresh

"Meh"

submission: Mentos Fresh
date: April 4, 2006

I couldn't even crack a smile, and I tried. Maybe I'm too old for that humour - but it seems a lit fart is not particularly original these days - and it seems you got to the punchline of your animation then decided to finish it off really halfassedly with a bunch of static scenes! Some running around while on fire, or something, would be much better. also animating the fart coming out. The sound was totally buggered for me, all went quiet and to the right speaker for a while, and the fart sound finished well before the cutting to china etc. was finished - but I assume this is just me since noone else has mentioned it.

If this is indeed your first effort at a submit it's pretty good really, but I didn't bother to submit until I knew I had something pretty decent. (It still only got 2.5 or something heh but lets not get into that). So keep it up, just remember that when you're animating flash, you'll really suffer come voting time if you ever start being halfassed. So say to yourself, 'am I doing a copout with this bit?' and if it's a yes, cut it out - do what you had in in your mind, not whats easier to animate! All the best for future efforts.

Author's Response:

I was planning on making it a bit longer at the end, like you said. Unfortunatly, I don't know much about editting sound. All I knew how to do was make it softer or louder, so I had to keep it only 30 seconds long. Otherwise, I would have aded two more scenes to the fart and had more motion. If you know somewhere I could learn more about sound editting, please tell me.

"Very nice"

submission: Habitat
date: April 4, 2006

Nicely done FBF there - I know how long it takes, heh. I stuck with a stick, it's amazing how quick you get at it really! Anyway - great music to go along with it, a nice little story - some of your angles and movements and things were really fantastic - I just thought the graphics were sometimes pretty well, silly looking I guess. You need an awful lot of time and talent to get human characters RIGHT though so you lose no cudos there. Adding that bit of colour was a nice wee touch, I really quite enjoyed this little movie - well done!

Author's Response:

Thanks a lot! I know, FBF is a painstaking, but it's worth it. I'm glad you liked the 3D, and I'll work on my graphics so the human proportions are better. Thanks for the advice and the review! I really value these kinds of reviews.... Cheers.

War (Fragment)

"Aspects were stunning"

submission: War (Fragment)
date: April 2, 2006

Parts of this were fantastic - other bits were pretty so so. Machine guns jumping in motionless arms etc, pretty halfassed. The figures moved really disjointedly - reading the reviews while it loaded I was expecting a short but perfect movie - but there's just too many unrealistic movements in the men! The graphics you did do were pretty good on the whole - but since there's only two sides to everything - front on and sideways - it radiates the limited imagination of a young kid - that or a halfassed effort. Colours were very nice though, some blurs and things were great - clearly you've got the skill, just gotta keep that interest in long enough to make something with a plot.
